1999年4月、TVアニメ『デジモンアドベンチャー』主題歌「Butter-Fly」でメジャーデビュー。
当曲は時を経て今なお国内外で絶大な支持を得ている。「Butter-Fly」と共に和田光司独特の掠れた「歌声」はアニソンファンを魅了して止まない。デジモンでは主題歌、挿入歌、エンディングなど、デジモンシリーズそのほとんどの作品で数多くの歌唱を担当。2000年にはTVアニメ『トランスフォーマー』主題歌「炎のオーバードライブ ～カーロボットサイバトロン～」を担当。
2003年、29歳の時に癌を患う。癌を乗り越え2005年に復帰。
「不死蝶」のアニソンシンガーとして更に勢いを増し活動を続ける中、2007年からは中南米などその活動域は海を渡り、病後も精力的に活動を続けアニソンシンガーとしてさらなる新しい境地を切り拓く。
2011年10月、癌が再発。治療により活動休止。
2013年10月3日、2年間の治療を終え再び歌の世界へと舞い戻る。
2014年1月、SOLIDVOXに所属。8月には国内最大級のアニソンフェス「アニメロサマーライブ」に出演、10月に自身のデビュー15周年を記念したソロライブを敢行。本人はもちろん、待ち望んでいたファンにとっても忘れられないライブとなった。
2015年3月、8年ぶりのリリースとなったミニアルバム『re-fly』をランティスより発売。また同年11月に『デジモンアドベンチャー』の新シリーズ、『デジモンアドベンチャー tri.』の劇場公開が決定・発表され、主題歌「Butter-Fly」を再度担当することが決定した。
病と闘いながら少しずつ活動を続けていたが、再びステージに立つことは叶わなかった。
2016年4月3日、永眠
April 1999: He makes his debut with Butter-fly, theme song to Digimon Adventure. Even through the passage of time, his debut song Butter-fly is garnering strong support both domestically and internationally. Along with the song, Koji Wada’s husky voice continues to capture thousands of Anisong fans.
He has sung theme songs, insert songs and ending songs for almost all of the titles of the Digimon franchise.
2000: Sings Honoo no OVERDRIVE ~Car Robot Cybertron~ theme song for the TV anime Transformers.
2003: At the age of 29, he is stricken with cancer. Resumes activities in 2005 after recovering.
He aggressively continued activities, becoming known as the “immortal butterfly” in the anisong singer world. He was also active abroad, mostly in South and Central America, from 2007.
October 2011: a resurgence of cancer causes him to stop activities once again.
October 3rd, 2013: After 2 years of treatment, he goes back into the music world with his singing.
January 2014: Changes his office to SOLIDVOX. In August, he performed in Animelo Summer Live, one of the biggest song festivals. In October, he pressed ahead with his solo concert, commemorating the 15th anniversary of his debut. It was an unforgettable live for both him and fans and remains in the hearts of fans to this day.
March 2015: Releases his first mini-album in 8 years re-fly under Lantis. In November of the same year, Butter-fly was selected as the theme song for a film in Digimon Adventure tri, a new series within Digimon Adventure.
He continued to work while fighting his illness, but the wish to stand on the stage once again was never granted.
Date of death: April 3rd, 2016.
